The Former President's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The true challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable strengths: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
